Young Kaymer’s return in Spain sets us up perfectly for a thrilling season finale
WITH the season-ending Dubai World Championship drawing ever closer, the Race to Dubai Championship is hotting up by the week and looks like going right to the wire.
Returning to the action after five weeks out with broken toes in a go-karting accident (silly lad), Martin Kaymer showed his intentions with a storming performance in the Castello Masters, missing the win he needed to reclaim the top spot from Lee Westwood by one shot.
Now, this week, is the eagerly-awaited return of Paul Casey, equally determined to make his mark at the World Match Play Championship.
For the first time since July, we now have all four title contenders going head-to-head in the run-up to Dubai with Rory McIlroy also in the 16-man line up in the Costa del Sol. Having all four big guns involved sets us up for a thrilling season finale and it’s a tough one to call. All eyes will be on top seed Casey and how he fares this weekend, although it is a big ask to expect him to return to his fluent self in his first tournament back with such a world-class field on show.
Westwood has been Mr Consistent all season, McIlroy has the wow factor and Kaymer the bit between his teeth. It promises to be a classic.
It was fantastic also to see Michael Jonzon clinch only his second title with an 18-foot putt on the final green, and congratulations to his caddy “Magic” Jonzon, a much-loved member of the tour for a good 20 years.
