Yes to independence would see Scotland leave the UK forever
If Scotland votes “Yes” to independence on 18 September, it will be leaving the UK forever with no opportunity to rejoin, Danny Alexander has warned.
The chief secretary to the Treasury and head of the UK’s effort to persuade Scots to stick with the United Kingdom, told The Sunday Telegraph: “It is not like a general election where if you elect an MP and don’t like them you kick them out five years later or if you don’t like the Government you kick them out five years later – this is a one-off. This is a decision that is forever”
Alexander, the MP for Inverness, added that he would be “desperately sad” if Scotland voted to leave the UK, as the government launched its final campaign to win a no vote this week. Millions of Scots will see adverts in newspapers north of the border, warning about the implications of voting “Yes” on household bills, currency and public services.
The latest polls on the likelihood of independence show a clear lean towards a “No” vote. An ICM poll for Scotland on Sunday put the “Yes” campaign chance of success at 45 per cent, compared to 55 per cent for a “No” vote when undecided voters were excluded.
