Yang tames Tiger for a famous win
KOREA’S Yong-Eun Yang last night became the first Asian-born player to win a Major title after recording a magnificent three-shot victory over world No1 Tiger Woods in the US PGA Championship at Hazeltine.
The 37-year-old began the day two shots down on Woods but clawed his way back with a three-under-par 69, while Woods struggled to an uncharacteristic 75.
It was the first time that the American had not turned a 54-hole lead into victory in each of his 14 Major title successes.
Yang is ranked 110 in the world and had claimed only one PGA Tour victory before yesterday, the Honda Classic earlier this season.
But he showed no fear in taking on Tiger, cancelling out the world No1’s lead with a stunning chip-in eagle at 14 before holding onto his advantage down the stretch.
For once, Woods buckled, finishing with successive bogeys for a five-under-par total, just two shots clear of England’s Lee Westwood and Northern Ireland youngster Rory McIlroy, who finished strongly.
Padraig Harrington, who began the day alongside Yang on six-under-par slumped to a disastrous final round 76 which included a five-over-par eight at the par-three eighth.
