Xbox down: Hacker group Phantom Squad takes responsibility for attack
A group of hackers known as the Phantom Squad have claimed responsibility for taking Xbox Live down earlier today.
The Microsoft gaming network suffered an outage early Friday morning, which the group said it was behind, claiming that the gaming giant doesn't "bother working on security", according to ZDNet.
Xbox services were running normally within a relatively short space of time, and the company has not confirmed whether it was the object of a Ddos (distributed denial of service) attack.
However earlier this month, Phantom Squad had tweeted that it planned to take down Xbox Live and PSN on Christmas Day "and we are going to keep them down for one week straight".
Twitter has since deleted the account, but this afternoon another account appeared to be set up, from which the hackers simply tweeted "we're back".
The group has attracted a response from hacktivists Anonymous, who tweeted that although they would not be behind such as move, "if you worry about not being able to play games on Christmas you need to re-evaluate priorities".
"If PSN or Xbox live goes down, Microsoft and Sony are the blame [sic]. You would expect these corporations to have sufficient DDos protection," the group added.
We won't take down PSN or Xbox live. But if you worry about not being able to play games on Christmas you need to re-evaluate priorities.
