World No2 Andy Murray gives Ivan Lendl perfect welcome back gift by progressing to Aegon Championships second round
Britain's Andy Murray ensured Ivan Lendl began his second stint as the world No2’s coach with a win after beating France’s Nicolas Mahut in the first round of the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club.
Defending champion Murray was required to save set points in both sets but prevailed 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-1) and will now face fellow Briton Aljaz Bedene or Frenchman Benoit Paire in round two.
“It was tough,” said Murray. “Because of the weather the last few days, we haven’t been able to get on grass too much to hit. It was a tricky first round and I’m glad I managed to get through.”
Two-time grand slam winner Stan Wawrinka, meanwhile, suffered a shock first-round defeat to Fernando Verdasco.
