World Cup: Vertonghen on target to keep Belgium winning record intact
BELGIUM 1 SOUTH KOREA 0
TOTTENHAM defender Jan Vertonghen earned 10-man Belgium their third win in Brazil to end South Korea’s slim hopes of qualification.
On the stroke of half-time Belgium’s Steven Defour was shown a straight red card for jumping into a tackle with Shin-Wook Kim.
Needing a win to have any chance of beating Algeria to the Group H runners-up spot, South Korea went closest to netting when Heung-Min Son’s overhit cross cannoned back off the bar.
But the Asian side’s qualification hopes were extinguished on 78 minutes when goalkeeper Seung-Gyu Kim could only parry away substitute Divock Origi’s low drive and Vertonghen followed up to fire in the loose ball.
