Wimbledon Spy: Eugenie Bouchard out but avoids bra rap

There will no repeat of last year’s fireworks for Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard after the 2014 women’s finalist suffered a straight-sets defeat to China’s Duan Ying-Ying yesterday. The 21-year-old, who has slumped to 12th in the world rankings from a high of five last year, has now lost nine of her last 11 matches. A modicum of solace came when Bouchard escaped a reprimand for breaking Wimbledon dress code by having a black bra strap on show.

Defending champion Petra Kvitova made light work of her first-round tie, taking just 35 minutes to beat Holland’s Kiki Bertens 6-1, 6-0. The clash was Kvitova’s first competitive grass-court match of the season. Third seed Simona Halep, meanwhile, perished to world No106 Jana Cepelova.

England football manager Roy Hodgson was on the front row of the Royal Box as Andy Murray made a winning start to his Wimbledon campaign, taking full advantage of the Under-21 side failing to reach the European Championship final.
