Whitgift wins final consent
FINAL plans for the £1bn redevelopment of the Whitgift Centre in Croydon were given the go-ahead on Wednesday night.
Croydon council and developers Hammerson and Westfield signed the section 106 deal – the last stage of the planning process that will see the pair contribute £29m towards transport and other local infrastructure improvements.
The project will see the tired Whitgift shopping mall turned into a 1.5m square feet retail and leisure destination with 600 new homes.
Westfield and Hammerson made peace and decided to develop the centre last year together after a long-running battle over the site.
