Where to eat it
THE WILD GAME CO.
Whitecross Street Market, EC1
The Wild Game Co has been going three years since beginning life on the Glorious 12th in 2010 and has led the charge of the game revolution. Andy Wauch founded the company with the aim of selling reasonably priced, restaurant quality meat across London’s food markets. All the wild game and venison is sourced from Wauch’s family in the Highlands.
THE CINNAMON CLUB
Great Smith Street, SW1P 3BU
Classically trained Indian chef Vivek Singh has helped pave the way for a new kind of Indian restaurant in the capital. From its Great Smith street location in Westminster, the Cinnamon Club keeps many MPs and civil servants happy with its delicately spiced dishes. Try the roast loin of Cumbrian red deer with sautéed potatoes, rock moss and onion sauce.
BOISDALE
Cabot Place, Canary Wharf, E14 4QT
Boisdale is one of the finest places to eat game in London – head over to its Canary Wharf, Bishopsgate or Belgravia restaurants for an irresistible meal to celebrate the start of the shooting season. Even better, there is also live music (if you go tonight you can listen to the John Colianni Trio, for a surcharge of just £4.50).
ST JOHN
26 St John Street, EC1M 4AY
Restaurateur Trevor Gulliver and erstwhile architect Fergus Henderson have developed a cult following for their “nose to tail” eating. Don’t be surprised if the nose and tail belongs to a rabbit or deer because St John also specialises in game. The Smithfield restaurant is stark and the food is similarly unfussy – but it’s always tasty.
THE GRILL AT THE DORCHESTER
53 Park Lane, W1K 1QA
Alain Ducasse’s three michelin starred restaurant tends to hog the limelight at the Dorchester, but over the years The Grill has built a reputation for excellent British cuisine. To celebrate the Glorious 12th it has added three grouse dishes to its seasonal menu, so you can enjoy traditional grouse pie with foie gras and black pudding and whole roasted grouse from the West Country.
