Westwood eyes Ryder captaincy
FORMER world No1 Lee Westwood says captaining Europe at a future Ryder Cup would be an honour, but hopes he still has plenty to offer as a player first.
Westwood, who threw away a final round lead to finish third in the Open on Sunday, has played in eight Ryder Cups, helping to defeat America on six occasions.
And while the 40-year-old hopes he can remain competitive enough to continue qualifying for the biennial event he retains the ambition of emulating Seve Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo.
“I would love to be the captain of the Ryder Cup team, that would be a great honour,” said Westwood.
“There have been some fantastic Ryder Cup captains and it would be lovely to follow in their footsteps.
“But I plan on playing in a few more just before that.”
Europe will be captained by Ireland’s Paul McGinley at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, Scotland.
