We won’t set out to wind up Rooney, vows US boss Bob
UNITED STATES coach Bob Bradley insists his side will not set out to wind up Wayne Rooney in tomorrow’s World Cup opener.
Rooney’s temperament has been brought into question after he lost his cool with referee Jeff Selogilwe in a low-key warm-up with Platinum Stars on Monday. Selogilwe went on to warn the England striker that he faced receiving a red card during the tournament if he did not curb his temper.
But Bradley denied that his American side will be deliberately targeting the Manchester United hitman to gain an advantage. “I’m asked this a lot and no we won’t try and wind him up. We don’t get into that sort of thing,” Bradley said.
“I have tremendous respect for Rooney and what he brings to England in so many ways. His effort, his competitiveness, his movement, his influence on that team is great. But we won’t try and wind him up.”
Bradley’s sentiments were echoed by star player Landon Donovan, who played against Rooney during his loan spell with Everton last season.
“I think Rooney is going to be just fine,” he added.
