Warren Buffett tops list of biggest charitable donations in 2014
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett is this year's most generous man, according to new research from Wealth-X, a research firm focusing on high net worth individuals.
His $2.1bn (£1.3bn) donation to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in the form of 16.6m shares of his company Berkshire Hathaway, propelled Buffett to the top spot.
Six of the top 10 donations went to educational institutions, two were given to health causes and another two went to philanthropic foundations.
However, generosity is difficult to measure, – so here's a look at the donations as a percentage of the philanthropists' net worth.
By this measure, John "Jay" Jordan was the most generous, with a donation equivalent to 21 per cent of his net worth. He made a donation of $290m to the University of Notre Dame, where he is an alumnus.
Jordan is a co-founder of The Jordan Company, a private equity firm specialising in buying and building companies.
