Vaccinations to be needed to attend football matches from October
Football fans who have not had two vaccinations may be banned from attending Premier League football matches from later this year.
Boris Johnson announced earlier this week that people will need to show Covid passports to enter nightclubs and some large events from the end of September.
The Sunday Telegraph reports that this will include Premier League football games and all spectator events with more than 20,000 people in attendance.
Premier League officials are reportedly in talks with the government over implementing vaccine passports as a part of the government’s drive to get more people vaccinated and to stop the return of social distancing restrictions later this year.
A government source told the Telegraph that the Premier League look to be an “early adopter” of mandatory vaccine passports.
It comes after fears that Euro 2020 was partly responsible to the spike in cases over the past month.
Currently, nightclubs and mass events do not have to make people show proof of vaccination or a negative test, but the government is encouraging organisers to do so.
Johnson said that once all adults have been offered two vaccines that mandatory Covid vaccine passports will be rolled out.
Vaccine take up among 18-30-year-olds has been far lower than for other age groups, leading some to speculate that the plan is aimed at trying to convince people to get the jab.
However, any attempt to get vaccine passports approved by parliament will be tricky for Johnson.
Labour has already said it will not support the measure and a large number of tory backbenchers are ready to rebel.
