US swimming star arrested
SWIMMING great Michael Phelps was arrested for driving under the influence during the early hours of yesterday morning in Baltimore, Maryland.
The 29-year-old, who is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals to his name, was also charged with excessive speed – driving at 84mph in a 45mph zone – and crossing double lane lines in his white 2014 Land Rover.
Phelps, arrested for drunken driving in 2004 and sentenced to 18 months probation, was said to be cooperative throughout the process and was later released. A police statement said: “He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests.”
