US blizzards in pictures: New York, Washington DC and east coast snowstorm second biggest in history
The major cities of New York and Washington DC and others across the east coast of the US have been brought to a standstill after a major snow storm hit, now known to be the second biggest in history since 1869.
Almost 27 inches of snow fell on Saturday in central park and was just an inch shy of the record set in 2006, killing at least 19 in several states.
More than 11,000 flights were cancelled as several states across the east coast declared a state of emergency. Transport ground to a halt and people were warned not to travel.
The worst of the storm hit on Saturday and it was still unclear as to whether Wall Street would be able to open on Monday, according to Reuters.
