Unprecedented double next on Swede’s radar
NEW world No4 Henrik Stenson has set himself the goal of adding the European Tour’s Race to Dubai title to his FedEx Cup triumph, but plans a month away from the sport first to recharge his batteries.
The 37-year-old became the first European to ever win the FedEx Cup, and £6.25m prize that goes with it, on Sunday, completing a staggering run of six top-three finishes in his last eight events.
Stenson, currently top of the Race to Dubai standings, can achieve an unprecedented double by topping Europe’s money list but insists golf will be at the back of his mind until his anticipated return at the BMW Masters in Shanghai on 24 October.
“I’m in a great position for winning the money title in Europe,” said Stenson. “It’s going to take some good play, but I’m going to try my hardest to accomplish that.
“I’ve got a whole month now I can rest and enjoy this incredible run that I’ve had. It’s going to take a little time for this to sink in.”
Yesterday marked exactly a year until the Ryder Cup tees off at Gleneagles and Stenson, the world’s highest ranked European, is almost certain of his place in captain Paul McGinley’s team, but will not take selection for granted.
“This win is going to help, together with the Deutsche Bank one, towards getting a spot on the team,” he added.
“That’s next on the horizon.”
