United plane aborts landing at last moment
A PLANE carrying the Manchester United team to Germany ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen, was forced to abort its landing moments before it was due to touch down in Cologne yesterday.
The chartered Monarch flight was approximately 400m above ground when the pilot had to cease descent with another aircraft blocking the runway.
The flight, also carrying manager David Moyes as well as members of his backroom staff, eventually landed safely 10 minutes after schedule and the pilot apologised over the intercom.
Defender Rio Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: “Landed in Germany…just…I’ve only just recovered after that choppy landing! #touchedcloth.”
The incident comes in the week where former United captain Bill Foulkes – a survivor of the 1958 Munich air crash which killed eight of his team-mates – died aged 81.
The United players are expected to wear black armbands this evening in memory of Foulkes.
