Union slams Ofwat decision on pricing and calls for more action
Private water companies and the industry regulator Ofwat should be scrapped, according to union GMB.
Ofwat’s price determination, published late last week, revealed that water bills in the UK would be reduced by five per cent over the next five years.
Jonson Cox, Ofwat chairman, said: “We are bringing down bills so customers can expect value for money, while investors can earn a fair return. Companies will need to stretch themselves to deliver much more with the same level of funding as in previous years. We will achieve more resilient infrastructure and better service as a result.”
However, GMB’s Eamonn O’Hearne Large said the “Ofwat regime” missed the central point about long-term water supply in Britain. “The lack of structures that can make decisions to get the water to where it is needed must be corrected,” he said. “The government has to act – and act speedily.”
