Underdog Evans in spotlight as Britain bid for historic final
DAVIS Cup captain Leon Smith is gambling on world No300 Dan Evans to see off 28-time champions Australia and inspire Great Britain to a first final since 1978.
Evans has been selected as one of Britain’s two singles players, alongside talisman Andy Murray, for the clash in Glasgow, which begins today.
Injury fears over Kyle Edmund prompted Smith to summon Evans but the skipper backed the 25-year-old to continue a rich vein of form that has gleaned 31 wins from his last 36 matches when he meets Bernard Tomic, ranked 277 places above him, this afternoon.
“It wasn’t an easy one,” said Smith. “But the fact that Dan has played an awful lot of tennis this summer and won a lot of matches really helps.”
