UK’s last deep coal mine to close as Kellingley Colliery ceases production
The merry oompah of a brass band will be but an echo at the UK's only remaining deep coal mine, as it shuts its doors today.
Kellingley Colliery, in North Yorkshire, will cease production just before 1pm today, after 50 years.
It's the end of a two-year process to close down the UK's deep mine, after difficult trading conditions caused by low coal prices.
UK Coal said this was a "historic moment".
"We, like the whole of the UK, owe a debt of immense gratitude to those who have done so much to help power this country over many decades."
Ownership of Kellingley will now revert to Harworth Estates, which will restore and redevelop the site. The company owns 27,000 acres of land across 200 sites in the North of England and the Midlands.
