UK weather: Storm Gertrude is coming, with 90mph winds Met Office warns and amber and yellow alerts for Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England
A new storm is expected to hit the UK on Friday, bringing winds of up to 90mph in parts of the country.
Officially named Storm Gertrude by the Met Office, it will bring severe gales to the north and Scotland, heavy rain, ice and snow.
Amber and yellow weather warnings have been issued by the forecaster for Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of north west and north east England.
Winds of 60mph-70mph are expected in some areas, but could reach 90mph in some more exposed locations.
"Showers, frequent and heavy at times, will turn increasingly to snow through Friday evening," the Met Office said.
The heaviest snow showers are most likely to the north of the central belt of Scotland. Here, away from the immediate coast, around five to 10cm of snow could accumulate through Friday night and Saturday morning. Elsewhere, snow accumulations will be more localised, around 1cm to 3 cm is possible and primarily above 200m.
Road surface temperatures are expected to fall below freezing overnight into Saturday morning, leading to a risk of icy patches forming.
