Freedom Day: UK runs out of lateral flow tests the day lockdown lifts
The UK has run out of lateral flow tests for Covid-19, the same day most lockdown restrictions were lifted in the country, which has been coined ‘Freedom Day’.
Those trying to buy testing kits from the government’s website have been told that ‘no more tests can be ordered’ and to ‘try again tomorrow’.
It comes amid fresh warnings of regular self-testing as nightclubs open their doors and bars welcome guests regardless of table size or households.
Lateral flow tests, Covid-19 tests which can be done from home, can be bought online in packs of seven which usually arrive in the post the next day.
Another 48,161 Covid cases were recorded in the UK on Sunday, an increase of over 50 per cent in a week.
The highest surge in cases in six months arrived on Saturday with 54,674 new infections in 24 hours.
A group of 1200 international scientists on Friday condemned prime minister Boris Johnson’s decision to go ahead with Freedom Day.
The scientists labelled the end to the majority of restrictions as “murderous”, as chief medical officer Chris Whitty warned that Covid-19 still had a “long way to run in the UK”.
