UK must build 40 new garden cities to meet housing demand or face shortfall
Finalists for one of the most prestigious economics prizes in the world have called on the UK government to build at least 40 new garden cities, or continue to face a shortfall in housing supply across the country.
Three of the five finalists for the Wolfson Economics prize advocated similar strategies when faced with the question: How would you deliver a new Garden City that is visionary, economically viable and popular?
Up to 40 new garden cities should be built, they said, with between 10,000 and 50,000 new homes in each. The finalists, which include homeless charity Shelter, all focused on the need for sustainable and affordable homes to tackle the UK’s housing crisis.
