Hong Kong protests: UK companies defiant in face of continued unrest
UK companies are not putting restrictions on travel to Hong Kong, despite continuing protests in the city, according to market sources.
Although several London-based banks declined to comment on the situation in the region, insiders said there were no immediate plans to follow the example of French cosmetics company L’Oreal, which yesterday banned all staff from travelling to Hong Kong until 6 October.
Hong Kong’s main index, the Hang Seng, fell to a three-month low yesterday following another day of unrest as thousands of protestors remained on the streets, and several banks in Hong Kong were forced to shut some branches or move staff to secondary branches.
Hong Kong markets will be closed today and Thursday for National Day, a Chinese public holiday which falls on 1 October. Demonstrations are expected to escalate over the two days.
