Tube map shows how many calories you can burn walking between stations
One way commuters can beat the seemingly never ending stream of tube strikes is to walk, jog or cycle between stations – and now they can work out how many calories this will burn thanks to the below tube map.
Dr Wayne Osborne's research found that most inner-London tube stations are around two minutes apart by train, or generally around a 15 minutes walk away, and the latter can generally help people to burn around 60 calories.
However, fitness freaks can up and ante by choosing to jog (which burns an extra 10 to 12 calories per minute), or hopping on one of the capital's many Boris bikes (which burns an extra seven calories per minute).
"In the outer regions of the city, the tube makes a big difference to travel times. But it’s when you get deeper into the centre that the difference between getting the tube and walking or jogging, in terms of time, starts to significantly narrow," Osborne who produced the research with Treated.com said.
"If you want an economical way to get in shape, and lower your risk of serious illness, then hopping off the tube one or two stops early and walking the rest of the way is a great way to keep fit and burn off some extra calories, and it isn’t going to bite that much more into your day than getting the tube normally would.
