Trott joy at Grand Prix victory as RideLondon gets a home winner
BRITAIN’S Laura Trott admitted her relief after sprinting to victory in the inaugural RideLondon Women’s Grand Prix on Saturday, part of a cycling-dominated weekend in the capital.
The Essex 21-year-old pipped compatriot Hannah Barnes by a bike length on the Mall, and the track cycling double Olympic gold medallist, enjoying a successful start to her fledgling road career, said her status as ambassador for event sponsor Prudential had made her even more anxious to succeed.
“I’ve been working so hard for this event,” said Trott, who was aided by Wiggle-Honda colleagues Dani King and Jo Rowsell, with whom she won team pursuit gold at London 2012 a year ago. “I felt like it was my event. I was so motivated to do a good job.”
Frenchman Arnaud Demare won the inaugural Men’s RideLondon-Surrey Classic yesterday, after more than 15,000 amateurs, including Mayor Boris Johnson, rode a 100-mile version of the 140-mile elite course.
