Trinity Mirror’s launching a new daily tabloid called New Day within the next fortnight

Trinity Mirror is preparing to launch a new daily newspaper slated to be called New Day just days after the Independent's run in print came to an end after three decades.

New Day could launch in less than a fortnight, with plans due to be unveiled at the same time as its annual results on 29 February, City A.M. understands.

There had been speculation that the publisher of the Daily Mirror and local titles such as the Bristol Post and Liverpool Echo would buy the i newspaper. Instead, it is launching its own daily tabloid, while the i was sold to rival Johnston Press by owner ESI Media on Friday at the same time the Independent in print was announced to be closing.

Trinity Mirror is one of few publishers to be investing in print while many others are shuttering magazines and launching digital ventures. It snapped up local publisher Local World late last year and had been linked with a purchase of Richard Desmond's Daily Express.

The last print version of the Independent and Independent on Sunday will be published on 26 March. It will remain online-only, however, there will be around 100 redundancies expected.

The name New Day has left some baffled.
