Trailblazer Evans lands World Championship wildcard punt
TRAILBLAZING female snooker player Reanne Evans has been handed a wildcard entry for the qualifying rounds of this year’s World Championship.
The 29-year-old, who has dominated the women’s game and won 10 successive world titles, will head to Sheffield’s Ponds Forge next month in a bid to qualify for the main event at the Crucible.
Evans will be one of 128 players bidding to join the sport’s top 16 and will have to win three matches to make it through to the tournament’s first round.
“This is a dream for me and you never know. I can just give it my best shot. I’m taking nothing for granted, but I will be doing my best,” said Evans.
“It is fantastic news and a no-brainer for me. This is going to be such good publicity and I am thrilled. The money on offer for just one win is far more than I’ve got in the last five or six years, and that’s just one game.
“It is good for the ladies to have the opportunity. We want the ladies to improve but I like playing the men, it’s a challenge for me.”
