Top Tesco executive Tony Hoggett to step down after 30 years
One of Tesco’s most senior executives is stepping down after more than three decades at the supermarket.
Tony Hoggett joined Tesco in 1990 and has served in a number of top roles in the UK and Asia.
He became group chief operating officer in 2018 before being appointed to the newly-created role of chief strategy and innovation officer in April this year.
In a note to staff today, seen by City A.M., Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy wrote: “I wanted to let you know that Tony Hoggett has decided to leave Tesco.
“Tony’s career in Tesco has spanned over 31 years, during which time he has worked in various roles, most recently as Group COO and Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer. Tony has made an incredibly valuable contribution over these years, and I wish him the very best for the future.”
Murphy added that succession planning would begin in due course.
Hoggett is leaving the supermarket chain to take up a new role in the retail sector, according to Retail Week, which first reported the move.
The high-profile departure comes at a key time for the supermarket giant, which last month reported sales of more than £10bn for its first quarter.
The figure marked a slight growth on the same period last year, when the UK was at the height of its first lockdown.
Despite the positive numbers, Tesco’s share price has lagged in recent months amid concerns about a post-lockdown slowdown.
