Theresa May’s shoes go under the hammer at Tory fundraiser
New Prime Minister Theresa May has a well-known penchant for fancy footwear – and now one lucky fan has whisked off with a pair of shoes that were actually owned by the recently appointed leader of the country.
The multi-coloured heels were auctioned off at a dinner to celebrate Patrick McLoughlin's 30 years as an MP – McLoughlin was this week appointed the Conservative Party Chairman.
The event, held at Chatsworth House in McLoughlin's constituency of Derbyshire Dales, was earlier addressed by former PM David Cameron, who described McLoughlin as a fighter, a survivor and a friend.
In a long and deeply personal speech Cameron spoke of the importance of friendship in politics and congratulated McLoughlin for his continued service in government before departing for London ahead of the dinner at which the new leader's shoes featured as the star auction prize. A flurry of bidding saw the price hit £1,200 in a matter of minutes.
Funds raised went to the local Tory Association, but if they really want to make the big bucks, it's the former female Prime Minister's wardrobe they need to raid – Margaret Thatcher's blue velvet wedding dress was auctioned off for £25,000 in 2015.
