Theresa May makes last-minute appeal for MPs to back her Brexit deal
Theresa May has urged the House of Commons to back her Brexit deal in a final appeal as MPs prepare to vote on her withdrawal agreement for a third – and possibly final – time.
The Prime Minister has vowed to resign if her Brexit deal is passed, before the next stage of negotiations with the EU begin.
She told the Commons: “This is the last opportunity to guarantee Brexit and I say to all those who campaigned to leave, who voted to leave, who represent constituencies who voted to leave … if we don’t vote for this motion today people will ask why did you not vote for Brexit?”
May added: “By voting for this motion today we can send a message to the public and EU that Britain stands by its word and we will leave the EU on 22 May.”
The UK was originally meant to leave the EU today.
If May’s deal is rejected for a third time today the UK is due to depart on 12 April with or without a deal.
The PM’s deal was first rejected in December by a margin of 230 votes, before a rejection by 149 votes earlier this month.
She told MPs today: “Whatever future relatiosnhip you want it needs to sit alongside this withdrawal agreement.”
Key Brexiters in Dominic Raab, Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg have confirmed they plan to support May’s deal today.
However, the DUP are still set to vote against it.
