The “world’s fastest car” Bloodhound SCC is in Canary Wharf right now
After eight years of research, design and manufacturing, involving over 350 companies and universities, scientists at the Bloodhound Project have created what they believe is the “world’s fastest and most advanced racing car” – and it’s on display in Canary Wharf this weekend.
Already 8,000 people have registered to see the Land Speed Racer in the Docklands’ East Wintergarden. The 13.5m long vehicle, named Bloodhound SCC, uses jet and rocket motors that give it nine -times the power output of all the cars in Formula One combined.
Carbon fibre panels have been partially removed on one side in order to show the technology inside the car, including the Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine and supercharged Jaguar V8 engine. Visitors in the Wintergarden will get to sit inside the cockpit of what is essentially a rocket on wheels.
Created by a team of Formula 1 and aerospace experts, the car has been designed to achieve 1000mph “safely”, with three separate braking systems, seven fire extinguishers and 500 sensors. The team plan to break the land speed record, which stands at 763mph, in South Africa next year.
According to members of the Bloodhound team, the fuel efficiency isn’t even that bad. At 57.9 miles to the gallon, this could still be a more eco-friendly option than a Volkswagen.
