The UK and France mulling Covid ‘wallet’ app for safe foreign travel
The UK and France are in talks to roll out a digital “wallet” with all necessary Covid-19 documentation needed for safe foreign travel.
The travel app seeks to end paper-based bureaucracy which adds another tally to the list of things to forget at home as a holiday-goer.
Transport secretary Grant Shapps met with his French counterpart Jean-Baptiste Djebbari in Folkestone, Kent yesterday to discuss using an app developed by the owner of the Channel Tunnel.
The Channel Tunnel, often referred to as the Eurotunnel, is a key route between the UK and France for holidaymakers.
The app can host Covid test results and proof of vaccination alongside pre-pandemic travel documents – and will help with a potential border backlog.
The Covid wallet, offered to Eurotunnel customers two weeks ago, can also warn users before they set off on their trip if they have not yet got all the information they need.
A similar system for hauliers to ensure they have the necessary post-Brexit cross-border documents was used as a template for the travel app.
