Spencer urges the government to “be brave” in easing the UK out of lockdown – a state of affairs he described as “agonising”. He warns of lasting damage to the British economy and to businesses if we don’t get the economy up and running again as soon as possible.
In a wide-ranging interview, Spencer:
– Suggests that the Prime Minister’s own experience of coronavirus “may incline him to a more cautious approach” to easing the lockdown
– Warns that the hospitality sector in particular faces “a profoundly challenging outlook” and that it’s “almost impossible to conceive how restaurants can take customers on any commercial basis – if social distancing is maintained”
– Says that the government’s economic support measures will see national debt reaching “eye-watering numbers”
– Stresses the need for a robust free-market response to the economic challenges presented by the global pandemic
– Urges the government not to extend the December deadline for a Brexit deal
