Take a break from the social media wormhole – if they let you
Adam Mosseri really cares about you. He’s “personally very excited” for a new Instagram “tool” which encourages you to “take a break”.
Mosseri, the head of the platform, wants you to be in the driver’s seat while you scroll through endless images designed to keep you hooked. The point of the new feature is to give you “more control over your experience”. If there was ever an admission that the users were never really in control of their time on social media, well, now you have it.
The latest tool is another shift in a PR exercise of trying to convince people it’s on them – not the designers’ of the app – if they are exposed to harmful content. They could have taken a break while they travelled down a wormhole of pro-anorexia or self-harm content. But lo and behold, they didn’t take that opportunity, so here we are.
“Only you know what’s best for you,” Mosseri opines before he signs off his video with a “peace”.
