Success storey: Cyclist Sarah triggers GB gold rush
CYCLIST Sarah Storey claimed Great Britain’s first gold medal of the London 2012 Paralympics yesterday with a searing victory in the Olympic Velodrome.
Storey, 34, claimed the eighth gold medal of her Paralympic career in emphatic style, thrashing Poland’s Anna Harkowska in the women’s C5 pursuit final.
The Briton, who won swimming golds as a 14-year-old before switching to cycling and who narrowly missed out on a place in the Olympic team, set her 72nd world record during qualifying.
Jonathan Fox won Paralympics GB’s second gold last night with victory in the S7 100m backstroke. British silver medallists on day one were cyclist Mark Colbourne in the C1-2-3 1km time trial and swimmers Hannah Russell, in the S12 400m freestyle, and Nyree Kindred, in the women’s S6 100m backstroke. Judoka Ben Quilter won bronze.
