Striker Daniel Sturridge returns to England training as Roy Hodgson prepares to finalise his Euro 2016 squad
England manager Roy Hodgson will tomorrow confirm the 23 players which he will entrust to deliver success for the Three Lions in this summer’s European Championship in France, which starts on 10 June.
Striker Daniel Sturridge boosted his chances of proving his fitness by returning to training today after missing Friday’s 2-1 victory over Australia, having reported for England duty with a calf problem.
Sturridge’s injury setback had raised fears that he could miss Euro 2016 or fail to make the cut. Hodgson’s striking options have been swelled by Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford, who yesterday signed a new contract which ties the 18-year-old to Old Trafford until June 2020.
It would appear increasingly likely that Rashford will get the nod and complete a late surge into Hodgson’s plans after only making his United debut in February, subsequently scoring eight goals in 18 appearances.
Should Rashford be included, Hodgson will need to axe two further players from the provisional 26-man squad he selected. Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph has already been ruled out with a groin injury.
Among the main contenders to be dropped are Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater, Newcastle’s former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend and Ross Barkley of Everton.
Centre-half Gary Cahill trained today having missed Friday’s match with a hip problem, while full-back Ryan Bertrand was the only player to sit out the session.
