Storey and Cox star as ParalympicsGB surge past London 2012 gold medal haul
Dame Sarah Storey claimed her 13th Paralympic title as Kadeena Cox made history by winning athletics gold having earlier in the Rio Games topped the podium in the velodrome.
Storey chalked up her second gold in Brazil after a dominant performance in the time trial C5, in which she finished over one minute clear of her closest rivals. Earlier in the Games she won the 3km pursuit C5.
“For me, it was about getting a second gold medal at these Games,” said Storey. “Every day in training I’m pushing on. I keep pushing myself in the knowledge my rivals are going to catch me and thankfully it’s not yet.”
Cox, meanwhile, became the first British Paralympian since the 1984 Games to win gold in two different sports as she added the 300m T38 title to the C4-5 500m time trial gong won on Saturday.
There was no restraining Great Britain on a day when they surged past the tally of 34 gold medals won four years ago at London 2012. Medals of all colours flowed in athletics and swimming during the evening session.
Halifax-born Hannah Cockcroft secured her fourth Paralympic title with a world record performance in the women’s T34 400m, while Michael Jones topped the podium in the men’s S7 400m freestyle.
The medal charge was relentless; Aaron Moores won the men’s SB14 100m breaststroke and Hannah Russell the women’s S12 100m backstroke, while earlier in the day Karen Darke and Steve Bate enjoyed road cycling time trial success and Sophie Wells championship test dressage glory.
