Stocking up on Christmas booze? Marks & Spencer is the best supermarket for wine – while Morrisons comes second
Marks & Spencer has retained its crown as the best supermarket wine retailer for the second year running – but if you're stocking up on Christmas booze, you could do a lot worse than head to Morrisons, which came second in the medal table at this year's International Wine Challenge (IWC).
M&S came first in the challenge, winning ten gold medals for its wins – including four Sherries, as well as four sparkling wines, including its £13 Graham Beck the Rhona Blanc de Blancs 2010, and its Champagne Oudinot Sparkling Rose, at £27. The retailer also picked up six silver medals and 22 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Morrisons scooped 36 medals, including three golds, nine silvers and 24 bronzes, for wines including its non-vintage sherries, as well as its Signature Chablis 1er Cru 2013 – priced at just £15.

Asda, Tesco and Aldi were also among the big winners – while posh nosh retailer Waitrose failed to win any golds, as did the Co-operative – although both took home a "handful of respectable Silver and Bronze medals", the IWC said.
"British shoppers really are spoiled for choice when it comes to picking up fantastic wines in their local supermarkets," enthused Charles Metcalfe, co-chairman of the IWC.
"Our judges have discovered some excellent own-brand and exclusive wines, whose quality often belies their modest price tags."
