Steel crisis 2015: UK steelmakers want Sajid Javid to push back on China at emergency EU meeting
Britain's steelmakers are pushing business secretary Sajid Javid to “spearhead immediate European action on anti-dumping measures” at a meeting of European ministers today in Brussels.
UK Steel says Javid, who called for the EU-wide emergency meeting over the steel crisis, needs to now press for further action to “speed up efforts to prevent unfair dumping” in China in particular.
UK Steel director Gareth Stace said: “The US and other countries have already moved to prevent cheap Chinese imports distorting their markets and now the EU must do the same and, do so quickly.”
A business department spokesperson would not comment directly on UK Steel’s request, but said that Javid requested the meeting to “put the difficulties felt by the steel industry both at home in the UK and across the continent high up on the European agenda”.
