Stanford in drug plea
BILLIONAIRE Allen Stanford, accused of leading a $7bn (£4.4bn) investment fraud scheme, is on so much medication he is unable to prepare for his upcoming trial, his lawyer said in a bid for bail.
Stanford has been on drugs since a fellow in-mate attacked him in September 2009, which left him with concussion, brain injury and multiple broken facial bones, according to court documents.
The once high-flying tycoon is charged with selling bogus certificates of deposit from his
Stanford International Bank on the island of Antigua.
Since the attack and his incarceration, Stanford has been prescribed medications listed in a sealed exhibit as part of his lawyer’s attempts to secure bail.
“These medications have left Mr. Stanford in an unfocused and numbed state of mind,” his attorney, Ali Fazel, said in a filing.
