ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND
St Moritz may be the grand old man of the European skiing scene, but it remains the most glamorous destination in the Alps, crowded with luxury boutiques, Michelin-starred restaurants and the film stars and royals flitting between them. It’s a good place to come if anyone in your family doesn’t ski, since there are numerous other attractions from mountaintop restaurants to skating, sleigh rides and even horse-racing on the frozen lake. St Moritz sits in the Engadin Valley, not far from the Italian border, and a couple of hours breathtaking train ride from Zurich. It’s high up which means good snow fall, and the area’s 350km of pistes, from the challenging terrain of Corvatsch to the Men’s World Cup downhill course at Piz Nair, will cater to all tastes.
Where to stay: Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is a majestic slice of five-star opulence. Alfred Hitchcock used to come here to gain inspiration, and from the stunning views over the lake, you can see why. The magnificent main restaurant is pure old-school glitz.
The hotel is offering Mini Ski Break packages between December 3-19, staying for two nights in a Superior room (with the possibility of an upgrade depending on availability at check in), two day ski-passes and a full-body massage, for CHF 2,120 (£1,300). All-inclusive lift passes for St Moritz and the surrounding area are offered by www.skisnowboardeurope.com, with prices from CHF134 for two days.
