Monye sidelined for 12 weeks
RUGBY UNION: England winger Ugo Monye has been ruled out of action for up to 12 weeks after undergoing surgery on his big toe.
The 27-year-old, who has been named in the Saxons squad this season, suffered the injury in Quins’ 29-29 opening day draw with Wasps and will now miss England’s autumn internationals.
The operation was described as “successful” by Quins.
Lara pips Lynn in Austria
GOLF: Jose Manuel Lara beat England’s David Lynn in a play-off to win the Austrian Open and rescue his Tour card.
The Spaniard fired a final round 64 to join Lynn on 17-under-par before winning at the first extra hole for a second European Tour title.
Ryder Cup star Graeme McDowell finished in a tie for third on 14-under with England’s David Willett.
Saints opt for Giants test
RUGBY LEAGUE: St Helens coach Mick Potter has chosen Huddersfield Giants as his team’s opponents for Friday’s Super League Grand Final eliminator.
Hot favourites Saints, seeking a fifth successive Grand Final appearance, had the choice of Huddersfield, who beat Warrington on Saturday, or Wigan, who defeated Hull KR on Friday.
“It’s the logical choice,” said Potter of the lower-ranked Giants.
Cavendish wins Tour of Spain
CYCLING: Mark Cavendish became the first Briton in 21 years to win the sprinters’ title on a Grand Tour after claiming the points jersey in the Tour of Spain.
The 25-year-old, who won three stages for HTC-Columbia, held onto the green jersey despite American rival Tyler Farrar winning the final stage.
Cavendish now heads out to Australia for the World Championships.
