Semenya free to compete
ATHLETICS: South African athlete Caster Semenya has been given the all-clear to return to competition by the International Amateur Athletics Federation.
The world 800m champion, 19, has been out of the sport for 11 months after undergoing gender tests.
But an IAAF statement yesterday read: “The IAAF accepts the conclusion of a panel of medical experts that she can compete with immediate effect.”
Legend Murali bows out
CRICKET: Legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is to retire from Test cricket after the first Test of their home series with India in Galle this month, it has been announced.
The 38-year-old is one of the finest bowlers ever produced, taking a world record 792 wickets from 132 Tests.
Muralitharan is expected to carry on playing limited-overs cricket, however.
White jersey for Brit Thomas
CYCLING: British Team Sky rider?Geraint Thomas claimed the white jersey after
finishing second behind Norwegian Thor Hushovd in a brutal third stage of the Tour de France between Wanze and Arenberg.
Swiss Fabian Cancellara regained the yellow jersey from Sylvain Chavanel, while defending champion Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong both lost time on the cobblestone sections of the course. Bradley Wiggins finished eighth.
Bell century roars Lions on
CRICKET: Ian Bell smashed a career-best ‘List A’ score of 158, but couldn’t prevent
India ‘A’ battling back to earn a draw against the England Lions at New Road.
Bell’s knock, from 143 balls, guided the Lions to 343-8 before India opener Abhinav Mukund led the reply with 114.
Meanwhile, Pakistan completed a 2-0 win over Australia in their Twenty20 series with an 11-run win at Edbaston.
