Sol Campbell may be backing a Brexit, but the Stronger In campaign is still winning the battle for celebrities
Former England captain Sol Campbell is the latest celebrity face to weigh in on the EU referendum.
Campbell isn’t the only star backing independence; last month, Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes declared his backing of the Leave campaign. The Tory peer branded the European Union “autocratic” and “anti-democratic”, and drew on the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and First World War to make his point.
Earlier this year, Sir Michael Caine came out in support of Britain’s departure after declaring he is “sort of certain” that it’s the right thing to do, admittedly adding that the thought of a Brexit is “scary”.
Vote Leave also has backing from novelist Frederick Forsyth, and slightly more tenuous support from actress Joan Collins, who tweeted the word “Brexit” with a thumbs-up emoji in February.
It’s impressive, but Vote leave still has a way to go if they want to beat Stronger In’s star-studded lineup.
At least nine celebs have come out in support of an “In” vote: Loose Women presenter June Sarpong, renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, nature-loving Bill Oddie, West Ham vice chair Karren Brady, actress Emma Thompson, former Dragons Kelly Hoppen and Hilary Devey, ex-Top Gear lad Jeremy Clarkson and comedian Eddie Izzard (but judging by his backing of past political campaigns that may not be a good sign).
Vote Leave tells The Capitalist there’s no need to worry about Brexiteers not getting their fair share of celebrity endorsements. A spokesperson said: “We don’t have official names yet, but we will be making announcements when we feel its appropriate.”
Our money’s on Danny Dyer.
