Sky chief to address Champions League defeat at City conference
SKY CHIEF executive Jeremy Darroch will address the company’s take on the recent upheaval of TV sport on Wednesday, City A.M. understands, after BT recently won exclusive rights for Champions League football from 2015.
Up until now Sky has played down the importance of Champions League content to Sky Sport, as accounting for only three per cent of viewing across its sports channels.
It is not yet known what Darroch will say during his speech at the Morgan Stanley Global Consumer Conference – which comes two days before BSkyB’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday – but it is thought he will seek to address investors’ concerns surrounding Sky’s strategy on sport.
With BT Sport’s competition in the television market having already pushed up rights costs of the Premier League and Champions League, 70 per cent and 125 per cent respectively this year, it is thought that Premier League TV rights could cost upwards of £5bn next year.
