Sir Stirling Moss: Hamilton has what it takes to win six drivers’ championships
FORMULA ONE legend Sir Stirling Moss is confident Lewis Hamilton possesses all the necessary credentials to dominate the sport for years to come and win six world championships.
The 29-year-old edged closer to his second drivers’ championship with victory at Sunday’s United States grand prix in Austin, in the process surpassing Nigel Mansell’s all-time British record of 31 race wins.
Hamilton enjoys a 24-point lead over title rival Nico Rosberg with two races remaining, although nothing is certain given the double points available at the final showdown in Abu Dhabi.
But not only does Moss believe Hamilton will build on his 2008 success, he insists the Mercedes driver is on course to leave an indelible mark on F1.
“I can’t see any reason why he can’t get four or five or six championships,” said Moss. “He is as good as we’ve got and we’re very lucky to have him.”
Moss is widely regarded to be Britain’s greatest driver never to win a World Championship, while Scotland’s Sir Jackie Stewart won three and Jim Clark and Graham Hill both tasted victory on two occasions.
And the 85-year-old is convinced Hamilton has earned the right to be mentioned in such exalted company and that history will judge him as Great Britain’s finest F1 competitor.
“Hamilton looks to be unassailable, quite frankly,” added Moss. “He’s up with Jimmy Clark and people like that, he is that good. The cars are that reliable these days, therefore one can judge a man by his talent, his enormous talent.”
