Simmonds secures second gold and more GB medals follow
GREAT BRITAIN’S Ellie Simmonds yesterday won her second gold of London 2012 by setting her second world record of the Paralympic Games in the SM6 200m individual medley.
Having on Saturday already defended her 400m freestyle title, the 17-year-old surpassed her score from the heats to win in three minutes, 5.39 seconds as compatriot Natalie Waddon finished third behind Germany’s Verena Schott and will now target further success in the 50m and 100m.
“I have two races to focus on now, the 50m and 100m [which she won in Beijing] and hopefully I’ll feel good when I wake up tomorrow,” said Simmonds, who was joined by Susie Rodgers, the women’s 4x100m relay team and Sascha Kindred in winning further British swimming medals.
It was in the men’s 200m individual medley SM6 that Kindred won silver while Rodgers, in the 100m freestyle S7, and the relay team secured bronze.
In athletics, wheelchair racer Mickey Bushell won gold and set a Paralympic record of 14.75 in the men’s T53 100m final while in equestrian dressage, Natasha Baker won her second gold of London 2012 with the highest ever score (82.800%) in grade II freestyle.
