Shoppers set to spend twice as much on mobile this Christmas
CONSUMERS are predicted to spend twice as much this Christmas on their smartphones and tablets as they did last year, new data out yesterday shows.
Shoppers will spend £2.9bn through mobile devices on UK websites this December compared with £1.45bn the same time last year, according to industry group IMRG and consultants Capgemini.
Around £2.3bn is expected to be spent on tablets and £600m on smartphones. Sales through mobile devices have surged this year with the boom in tablet ownership, and currently account for 27 per cent of online retail sales. IMRG and Capgemini predict total online retail revenues to be sharply up on last December, breaking though the £10bn barrier for the first time.
Meanwhile growth in global advertising spending will accelerate to 5.8 per cent a year by 2015, driven by demand for marketing via mobile devices and a broad-based economic recovery, according to a Publicis report. ZenithOptimedia said total spending on advertising was expected to rise by 3.6 per cent this year.
