Sherwood talks up chances of thwarting Arsenal’s FA Cup bid
BUOYANT Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has backed his side to deliver an FA Cup upset in tomorrow’s final against Arsenal at Wembley and end the club’s 19-year trophy drought.
Villa’s last piece of silverware was the League Cup in 1996, a final in which Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke were on target in a commanding 3-0 victory over Leeds.
Their campaign this season has been dominated by relegation struggles with the Villans finishing 17th in the Premier League, despite an upturn in form following the appointment of former Tottenham manager Sherwood in February.
FA Cup holders Arsenal, by contrast, have been in sparkling form, losing just four of 26 matches across all competitions since the turn of the year and securing automatic qualification for the Champions League.
“It’s a one-off game and form goes out of the window, we know that we are the underdogs, we know that Arsenal have been there and done that,” said Sherwood.
“They are the holders of the trophy and it is going to be very difficult for us but we are not just there to make the numbers up, but to give them a good game.”
